10 Top Digital Marketing Automation Tools That Could Transform Your Business

It was 2008.

Trying to find a way to shorten a link for Twitter to get the tweet under 140 characters was a challenge. You needed a tool to do that simple task.

Then I stumbled upon “that” tool.

Twitter then used it as the default URL shortening service in May, 2009 until it created its own.

Social media and digital marketing was simple back then. Twitter and Facebook were it and digital marketing revolved around Banner ads, Google AdWords and email marketing.

But it quickly became complex with many moving parts.

Just the Twitter torrent of tweets with @mentions, retweets and #hashtags needed social media management tools. Distilling the noise and managing the engagement required more than just watching the native Twitter feed.

Raw social media automation software that allowed you to grow your followers, tweet content and other mundane tasks started to emerge. They weren’t pretty but most of the time they worked.

But back then even simple social media automation was frowned upon because it wasn’t really social.

The first wave of digital marketing automation

On the social web tools like TweetDeck and Hootsuite were launched by enterprising entrepreneurs to help handle the complexity and noise.

They provided the dashboards for managing Twitter and Facebook.

That was one thing but other networks were launched. It was getting complicated….Pinterest, Instagram and Google+ were the next wave. These were also followed by Vine and others and now we have Meerkat and Periscope. And we are just talking english speaking social networks.

During this first wave the web connected mobile phone started to make its presence felt. Today there are 2.7 billion of these now on the web and growing at 39% per annum. But the full impact of this is wasn’t felt till the second wave.

Every switched on marketer was excited by the launch and possibility of every new platform.

As marketers discovered the power of social media to reach the world in real time the need for more sophisticated tools became apparent.

The second wave

As social media became seen as the next start up gold rush, the older generation of software providers in email marketing and lead generation rushed to join the party. This saw the rapid evolution of platforms like Marketo, Eloqua and Pardot amongst many.

Here is a timeline from Marketing Automation Insider that suggests the journey started in 1992 with Unica. According to them the industry is now $1.65 billion industry and has seen $5.5 billion in acquisitions by Salesforce, IBM, Adobe and Microsoft and others.

Digital Marketing Automation Tools

The smart phone and mobile market reached critical mass and is accelerating digital noise and adoption.

Established Enterprise software providers at the big end of town including IBM, Oracle, Salesforce, Adobe and Teradata started building their own platforms. But to accelerate their evolution they started acquiring technology start-ups that added features and market share.  Salesforce bought Exact Target, IBM purchased SilverPop and Oracle bought Eloqua.

Today digital marketing automation has become big business. It is about marketing at scale with multiple partners, many social networks and managing content and permissions.

Marketing is now not just an art but becoming a science. To do it well you will need the tools to manage, measure and optimize your efforts.

What is digital marketing automation?

Digital marketing automation has its roots in email marketing.

So how do we define it?

It is software that allows you to automate repetitive tasks, reduce human error, manage complexity and measure and optimize your efforts.

How complex is it and what skills does it need?

We can also add SEO and digital advertising to the above mix.

Each of those disciplines from analytics to social media is complex in its own right. One of the biggies that will become more important is “analytics”. The ability to sift through the big data and make insightful decisions to optimize your marketing efforts.

The skill gap shows that “analytics” is the biggest talent gap.

So what platform do you choose?

There isn’t an easy answer. It will depend on whether you are a small, medium or large brand.

Some platforms are better at email, others social media and then analytics. Then there is the user interface and ease of use. This is important when using complex software.

One review site that provides valuable insights is G2 Crowd. They score products and vendors based on ratings and reviews gathered from the user community, as well as data aggregated from online sources and social networks. They apply a unique, patent-pending algorithm to this data to calculate the customer satisfaction and market presence scores in real time.

The rating variables

The satisfaction rating is affected by the following:

  • Customers’ likelihood of recommending the product to others (this is the question we use to calculate the star rating)
  • Satisfaction ratings gathered from questions in the review
  • User ratings of features specific to a particular category of software
  • The number of reviews received on G2 Crowd; buyers trust a product with more reviews, and more reviews means a more representative and accurate reflection of the custom1er experience.
  • How recently the review was submitted; reviews that have been written or updated more recently receive a higher weight to help more accurately captur1e the rapidly evolving nature of software.

The Grid

Below is the G2 Crowd Grid Showing where the different platforms sit according to their ratings.

The 2016 SEO Checklist -2017

The 2016 SEO Checklist

Every time we start a new website, we typically find ourselves doing the same things over and over again, in order to lay a solid SEO foundation. We decided to write this checklist for the ClickMinded SEO training course.

Funny enough, I first learned SEO by Googling ‘seo checklist’ and applying everything I could find. Now, this page is ranking #1 for the same term: ‘seo checklist’. META.

This list covers the most important things you should do from an SEO perspective when you’re starting a new site.

There’s one thing I want to reiterate before you embark on your SEO checklist journey: On-page optimization is best thought about as incrementally beneficial. The big mistake people tend to make is that they find a checklist, they go through everything on it and say “Oh no! I’m missing one thing – now I can’t rank and everything is ruined!!!!!11111”. That’s not the right way to think about it.

If you can get everything on this list, that’s great! If you can only get most, that’s okay too. You want to make your site as SEO-friendly as possible, but in general, most people aren’t able to do all of the things on this list for every page of their site.

The 2016 SEO Checklist

Check off items as you go along.
Note: Not all of these may apply to you!

Have you set up Gmail filters for your new site, or setup a new email address? This isn’t necessary, but always makes things easier for me.
Have you installed Google Analytics? This is not optional!
Have you installed Google Search Console? Again, not optional.
Have you installed Bing Webmaster Tools? Do this too.
Using WordPress? Have you installed Google Analytics by Yoast and Yoast SEO? These plugins will make your life 10x easier.
Have you checked Google’s Search Console for 404 / 500 errors, duplicate content, missing titles and other technical errors that Google has found? Make sure to keep up with any messages Google is sending you.
Have you used Browseo to find even more technical errors?  The most common detrimental errors people tend to make are 302 redirects that should be 301 redirects.
Have you used Screaming Frog to find broken links, errors, and crawl problems?
Have you used Google’s Keyword Planner? Be sure to consider searcher intent and difficulty, pick 1 keyword per page, and you’ll generally want to start with lower-volume keywords first.
Have you looked at competitor link profiles? This is the easiest way to get started with link building. This way, you can see what kind of anchor text they’re using, as well as how and where they’ve been getting their links. Something like the SEO Toolbox, ahrefs, Link Diagnosis, Open Site Explorer, or Majestic.
Have you incorporated your primary keyword (or something close) into your page URL?
Are all of your title tags ~65 characters or less? Title tags over this will be truncated in results.
Are all of your meta description tags ~155 characters or less? Meta description tags over this will be truncated in results.
Have you used an H1 tag? Is your keyword in the tag? Is it before any (H2, H3, H4…) tags? Are you only using 1 H1?
Do you have a healthy amount of search engine-accessible text on your site? My recommendation is at least 100 words because you want to give search engines an opportunity to understand what the topic of your page is. You can still rank with less, and you don’t ever want to put unnecessary text on your site, but I recommend not creating a new page unless you have roughly ~100 words worth of content.
Did you use synonyms in your copy? Remember: synonyms are great, and using natural language that’s influenced by keyword research (rather than just pure keywords) is highly encouraged!
Do your images have descriptive ALT tags and filenames? Search engines “see” images by reading the ALT tag and looking at file names, among other factors. Try to be descriptive when you name your images. Don’t overdo it, though!
Are you linking to your internal pages in an SEO-friendly way? Are you describing the page you’re linking to in the anchor text, so that both users and search engines understand what it’s about? I recommend not using anchor text in your global navigation because it can look like over-optimization. Stick to in-content links instead.
Have you started off-page optimization and began building links? This is the hardest, most important aspect of SEO! Check out the ClickMinded Link Building Strategy Guide to get started.
Have you made sure your site isn’t creating any duplicate content? Utilize 301 redirects, canonical tags or use Google Webmaster Tools to fix any duplicate content that might be indexing and penalizing your site.
Are you using absolute URLs in your code? Some CMS platforms give you the option. Use absolute URLs instead of relative ones.
Have you checked your site speed with Google PageSpeed Tools?
Have you created an XML sitemap and submitted it to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools? Use or the Google XML Sitemaps WordPress Plugin.
Have you created a Robots.txt file and submitted it in Google and Bing Webmaster Tools?
Have you claimed your business / website username on other major networks for reputation management reasons? Not only do you want to make sure no one else gets your account name, but you can often “own” all the results on the first page of a search for your brand if you’re a new website or company. Here is the URL structure of some of the major networks (I’ve avoided linking directly to sign up pages because they keep changing):

How to Add Social Media Links to Your Google Search Profile

How to Add Social Media Links to Your Google Search Profile

When supporters search for your organization on Google, you want them to see the best possible results on page one.

Part of this includes making sure your website profile is up to date, including your social media profiles.

Google recently published instructions for adding code to your nonprofit’s website so that your social media profiles will appear in your website’s Google Profile, like in the example below.

Currently, Google only supports these social profiles:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • Myspace

To add your social media profiles to your website’s Google Profile, follow these simple steps:

  1. Make sure you have the ability to add script to your website’s backend. If you don’t, send these instructions to your website developer.
  2. Copy and paste the following code into a plain text document:
    <script type="application/ld+json">
    { "@context" : "",
      "@type" : "Organization",
      "name" : "Your Organization Name",
      "url" : "",
      "sameAs" : [ "",
  3. Add the name of your organization to the ”name” section of the script.
  4. Add your website to the “url” section of the script.
  5. Add your social media links to the ”sameAs” section of the script.
  6. Copy and paste your edited script into the head or body of your webpages. If you use WordPress, you should place this script where you place analytics or retargeting scripts.
  7. Troubleshoot your script with Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool.

Investment Lessons From India’s Journey in ICC World Cup, 2015

The ICC Cricket World Cup, 2015 is the flavor of the season. Our Indian team is playing brilliantly with 6 wins out of 6 league games and a quarter final win against Bangladesh. It is really heartwarming for an Indian fan to see this turn-around after a disastrous tour of Australia where India managed to win only a single game in the Triangular championship. This turn-around did not happen overnight, in fact this is a result of some principles that our team management believed in and stuck to. There are some very valuable Investment lessons we can learn from the way our team has been playing.

Look at the Big Picture

Team India: There was criticism from the media and fans alike who were aghast with Rohit Sharma’s form. Similar sentiments were echoed for Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja. Some even questioned their very presence in the team. Nobody had given Mohammed Shami an outside chance to be India’s highest wicket taker.

Similarly, often times economic situations in the country may force the markets to behave differently than you would expect. It is important to keep faith and avoid the tendency to Buy-Low, Sell- High. Although it would seem like the most logical way to make quick money, historically this tendency has caused many retail investors to lose their hard-earned money. Let us get one thing straight – there is no crystal ball to predict how the markets perform. If someone had the crystal ball, he would have been the world’s richest man.

Have Faith and Back your Decisions:

Team India: In spite of being hounded by the media and fans who went so far as to question his integrity in team selection, captain cool Dhoni kept faith in his team. He shielded them and gave them the opportunity to perform. With the captain firmly on their side, the team went out and played their hearts out and the results are there for everyone to see. Dhoni’s faith in his team and his conviction to back his decisions is the fundamental reason why India which was almost counted out of the cup is the live-wire of the World Cup this year.

Similarly, when making investments, it is important to have faith in your portfolio and not try to tinker too much with it with only short term goals in mind. It helps to have a long term vision and allow your investments to weather the markets so that they are primed to reap benefits when the storms die down.

Diversification will definitely build Wealth

Team India: The best thing happening to our team right now is that every match has a different hero, every match has been won for us by a different team member. Unlike in the past, we are not burdened by one team member carrying a billion hopes anymore. We are a team that can proudly say that we are a bunch of winners under one roof. We have some of the best batsmen, some of the best bowlers and some of the best fielders in this World Cup. But the most important thing that we noticed in our team is that in each match, there was a different team member who put up his hand and delivered the goods when it mattered. In the end, it was not one man’s brilliance that got us to be where we are today, but a set of people who delivered the results when some of them could not do so well.

When it comes to investments, it’s a known fact that diversification helps reduce the risk associated with investments in the markets. But when it comes to actually investing in a diversified portfolio, we get bitten by the lazy bug and end up investing in less number of asset classes than what we should be investing. It is very prudent to go that extra mile and implement your financial plan completely so that the power of diversification helps you to accumulate wealth, same way as it is helping our Indian cricket team.

While we cheer for our Indian cricket team and celebrate their success, there are some very strong fundamental values that they teach. It would be a good idea to implement these values into our investment decisions to build wealth in the long term.

A must read story of Ratan Tata buying Jaguar to take revenge from Ford.

Ratan Tata With Jaguar The word “Great” is not the only difference in “just people” and “great people”. The story we have, should tell the reason. TATA group is a leading business house in India. Apart from scale of business operations, they are also known for values observed in their business practises.

. Ratan Tata is another man, who continued the legacy of India’s most trusted business. When someone is insulted, anger is the only outcome. However, great people can use this anger to plan business policies and goals. Ratan Tata driving first Tata Indica Tata group launched its passenger car Tata Indica in year 1998. The group was led by Ratan Tata and it was his decision to enter in the passenger car business. Tata Indica was a failure in its first year and the experiment seemed to be failing.

Many people started advising Ratan Tata that he should sell the passenger car business. Ratan Tata also agreed to this and a proposal was given to Ford, they showed interest too. Ratan Tata, along with his close team members reached Detroit to discuss the same. Detroit hosts Ford headquarter and considered and the automobile hub of United States. While the meeting went on for 3 hours, it seemed that the behaviour of Ford people was insulting toward Tata group representatives. In the meeting, chairman of Ford (Bill Ford) said to Ratan Tata, “why did you enter in the passenger car business when you were not knowing of it. It will be favor if we buy this business from you”.

Ratan Tata decided to move back home. While travelling, he was very tense as the feeling of being insulted was on his mind.

The JLR Deal – Ratan Tata After earlier failures, Tata Motors did well with its business of passenger cars but in the same period, Ford did very bad.

In 2008, when Ford was on its way of bankruptcy, Tata Group offered Ford to buy their luxury car brand Jaguar-Land Rover. Bill Ford, along with his team, reached “Bombay House”. “Bombay House” is the headquarter of Tata Group. The deal was finalized for 2.3 billion US $, which amounted to 9300 crore Indian Rupees at that time. Ford was incurring heavy losses from Jaguar – Land Rover division.

In the meeting, Bill Ford said to Ratan Tata, ” You are doing a big favor for us by buying Jaguar- Land Rover”.

Jaguar- Land Rover is now owned by Tata Group and is currently making profit.

This incidence was first disclosed by Pravin Kadle, who is the head of Tata Capital and was part of the team which had visited Ford headquarter along with Ratan Tata. Pravin Kadle told this story while receiving Y.B.Chavan award on behalf of Ratan Tata in Mumbai on 15thMarch 2015.
